In response to wonderful feedback I received on my first review, I have made some changes to my review rubric. You can review the updated version here: http://www.keithsayer.com/2013/02/07/gaming-rubric/
Just a quick rundown of the changes:
- I renamed the “Originality” category “Uniqueness” for clarity and fairness.
- I added a question to the “Uniqueness” category about whether or not there are similar games on the market today. This question clarifies my point that a sequel or remake can receive a good “Uniqueness” rating because it causes me to think about games that are coming out at relatively the same time; does the game stand out as unique among its contemporary releases.
- Added an “Intangible” category that is really just a modifier to account for games that are so good in one or more aspects that it overrides a low score in another category. I will use a scale from -10 through +10 and offer an explanation for why I chose this modification. In the example of the XCOM review, I might have rated completeness closer to 5 rather than 8 and given the intangible rating a +3 rating. This system allows me to give the game an overall rating that is fair for the individual game.
So, while you are waiting for my next review, I wanted to share a countdown of the top 5 upcoming game trailers I’ve seen recently. I’m hoping to get my hands on these titles to do reviews because I’m very excited from the trailers.
5. Path of Exile
This game looks like an exciting mix between an ARPG and an MMO. It is going to be completely free to play and is now in beta. Check it out: http://www.pathofexile.com/
4. Grand Theft Auto V
There’s nothing quite like a GTA game for when you’re bored. Looking forward to the ridiculous number of vehicles in this upcoming one, including jets! http://www.rockstargames.com/V/
3. Elder Scrolls Online
I love the Elder Scrolls game and this upcoming MMO based in its universe looks like it might just be a non-WoW clone. http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/
2. Total War: Rome 2
This latest game from CA’s longstanding series promises to challenge the limits of RTS strategy games. We’re looking at a completely new campaign experience and scalibility that allows players to use anything from an integrated graphics laptop to a top end gaming pc with ease. http://www.totalwar.com/en_us/rome2
1. Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm
I put this one first not because it is my most anticipated game, but I love this video the most. Technically its the opening cinematic, but they released it early so it functions as a trailer. Enjoy! http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/games/hots/
